Some stellar wines shine at the inaugural South African Women’s Wine Awards

The 2016 South African Women’s Wine Awards recognize some stellar wines.

The 2016 South African Women’s Wine Awards saw some big-name players in the South African wine industry enter, and we are very pleased with the spectrum of quality wines entered. The Cape Wine Academy handled the massive logistics to ensure smooth running of the exciting double-blind tasting held on 10 June 2016.

The diverse group of women tasked with the judging were thrilled with the entries and the quality of the wines. The aim was to find gold medal winners and to commend the top-scoring producers.

The top-scoring producers were:
· Accolade Wines
· GlenWood Vineyards
· Haskell Vineyards
· Taillard Family Wines

The goodwill experienced from every sector in the Winelands made this event a pleasure to host. Entries came from boutique cellars, wine estates, wholesalers and co-operatives.

The aim of the annual competition is to find worthy wines as judged by an all-female panel and to crown the best wines and wineries entered.

The judges were Lizette Tolken, Pearl Olivier, Hannetjie Joubert, Catherine Dillon, Karen Freitag, Adré van Rooyen, Karin Visser, Wanda Cronjé and Suné van der Merwe. The proficiency of the judges – selected by the Cape Wine Academy – underpin the value of their ratings.

The feedback was very positive. One judge said the Shiraz category was one of the strongest, being very consistent and with good quality. Another said there were quite a few standout wines in the Sauvignon blanc category, which indeed yielded some of the highest scores.

The MCC category was a favourite, with some wines noted for their freshness and toasty notes. White blends were praised for their complexity and style variety. Cape blends and Bordeaux blends were also favourites, and some of the highest scores went to Cabernet Sauvignons.

Details about the 2017 South African Women’s Wine Awards will be announced in the last week of January 2017. For more information, visit or email
